RESUMO

Abstract Melon production in the Brazilian semi-arid region is subject to the use of marginal waters with high salinity. However, the use of regulators and bioactivators in seed treatment can mitigate the harmful effects of salts in irrigation water. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments with plant regulators and bioactivator in melon seeds for the production of seedlings irrigated with biosaline water from fish farming effluent. For this, two trials with the Goldex and Grand Prix hybrids were carried out separately. A completely randomized design was used in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (pre-germination treatments × water dilutions). In addition to the control, the seeds were treated with salicylic and gibberellic acids and thiamethoxam. The waters used for irrigation were local-supply water, fish farming effluent (biosaline water) and these diluted to 50%. Physiological and biochemical analyses were performed for fourteen days. Biosaline water (5.0 dS m-1) did not affect the emergence of Goldex melon seedlings, but compromised the establishment of the Grand Prix cultivar. Seed pre-treatments with salicylic and gibberellic acids attenuate the effects of water salinity and promote growth modulations, resulting in more vigorous melon seedlings.

Salvia hispanica cultivation is recent in Brazil and occurs in the off-season, when there is lower water availability in the soil. Water deficit is one of the abiotic factors that most limit germination for compromising the sequence of metabolic events that culminate with seedling emergence. Several attenuating substances have been used to mitigate the effects resulting from this stress and give higher tolerance to the species. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the action of different agents as water stress attenuators in the germination and accumulation of organic compounds in S. hispanica seedlings. The treatments consisted of pre-soaking the seeds for 4 hours in salicylic acid (1 mM.L-¹), gibberellic acid (0.4 mM.L-¹), distilled water and control treatment (without soaking). The seeds were germinated at osmotic potentials of 0.0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.3 and -0.4 MPa, using PEG 6000 as an osmotic agent. The variables germination percentage, germination speed index, shoot and primary root lengths, total dry mass, proline, total soluble sugars and total free amino acids were analyzed. Salicylic acid and gibberellic acid led to the best results among the attenuators tested, increasing germination, length, dry mass and biochemical components of S. hispanica seedlings under water deficit. Therefore, salicylic and gibberellic acids are efficient in mitigating water stress in S. hispanica seeds up to the potential of -0.4 MPa.

BACKGROUND: Smoking causes a threefold increase in the risk of surgical complications in flaps. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) increases the viability of chronic wounds. However, there are few studies concerning the effects of HBOT on surgical flaps in patients who smoke. This study aimed to analyze the effect of HBOT on the viability of cutaneous flaps in tobacco-exposed rats. METHODS: Twenty Wistar rats were exposed to tobacco smoke for two months. Following this period, all animals underwent a dorsal cutaneous flap (3 × 10 cm) surgery and were divided into two groups: control (n = 10) and HBOT (n = 10). HBOT was performed in seven daily sessions (2 ATA, 90 min). After seven days, the animals were euthanized. The outcomes were total area, viable area, viable area/total area rate, analysis of dermal appendages and angiogenesis (hematoxylin-eosin), and gene expression analysis of iNOS and VEGF-a biomarkers. RESULTS: The HBOT group showed an increase in viable area compared with the control group (84% versus 47%, p = 0.009, respectively). The HBOT group also showed an increase in appendage units (1.69 ± 0.54 versus 1.87 ± 0.58, p = 0.04) and angiogenesis density (1.29 ± 0.45 versus 1.82 ± 0.64, p < 0.001) compared to the control group. There was a difference between the control and HBOT groups in iNOS levels (0.926 ± 1.4 versus 0.04 ± 0.1 p = 0.002, respectively). However, this study did not show a difference between the groups concerning the gene expression of VEGF-a. CONCLUSION: The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy increased the viability of cutaneous flaps in tobacco-exposed rats and decreased iNOS mRNA levels; however, it did not change VEGF-a levels. RESUMO

This paper focuses on the development of intelligent controllers for use in a process of enzyme recovery from pineapple rind. The proteolytic enzyme bromelain (EC 3.4.22.4) is precipitated with alcohol at low temperature in a fed-batch jacketed tank. Temperature control is crucial to avoid irreversible protein denaturation. Fuzzy or neural controllers offer a way of implementing solutions that cover dynamic and nonlinear processes. The design methodology and a comparative study on the performance of fuzzy-PI, neurofuzzy, and neural network intelligent controllers are presented. To tune the fuzzy PI Mamdani controller, various universes of discourse, rule bases, and membership function support sets were tested. A neurofuzzy inference system (ANFIS), based on Takagi-Sugeno rules, and a model predictive controller, based on neural modeling, were developed and tested as well. Using a Fieldbus network architecture, a coolant variable speed pump was driven by the controllers. The experimental results show the effectiveness of fuzzy controllers in comparison to the neural predictive control. The fuzzy PI controller exhibited a reduced error parameter (ITAE), lower power consumption, and better recovery of enzyme activity.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Inhibition of carotid body (CB) function is the main mechanism involved in the attenuation of respiratory drive observed during hyperoxia. However, only a few studies at 5.0 atmospheres absolutes (ATA) have analyzed carotid body structure or function in hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO2) situations. We hypothesized that rats will present CB structural alterations when exposed to different lower hyperbaric oxygen doses enough to alter their chemosensory response to hypoxia. METHODS: Twenty-one adult male Wistar rats, divided into three groups, were maintained in room air or exposed to O2 at 2.4 or 3.0 ATA for six hours. Histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical analyses for neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and F2-isoprostane were performed in the excised CBs. RESULTS: Histological analyses revealed signs of intracellular edema in animals exposed to both conditions, but this was more marked in the 3.0 ATA group, which showed ultrastructural alterations at the mitochondrial level. There was a significant increase in the volume density of intraglomic-congested capillaries in the 3.0 ATA group associated with an arteriolar vasoconstriction. In the 2.4 ATA group, there was a relative increase of glomic light cells and a decrease of glomic progenitor cells. Additionally, there was a stronger immunoreactivity for F2-isoprostane in the 3.0 ATA O2-exposed carotid bodies. The glomic cells stained positive for nNOS, but no difference was observed between the groups. Our results show that high O2 exposures may induce structural alterations in glomic cells with signs of lipid peroxidation. We further suggest that deviation of blood flow toward intraglomic capillaries occurs in hyperbaric hyperoxia.

RESUMO

The different mechanisms involved in the alloying of epitaxial nanocrystals are reported in this Letter. Intermixing during growth, surface diffusion, and intraisland diffusion were investigated by varying the growth conditions and annealing environments during chemical vapor deposition. The relative importance of each mechanism was evaluated in determining a particular composition profile for dome-shaped Ge:Si (001) islands. For samples grown at a faster rate, intermixing during growth was reduced. Si surface diffusion dominates during H2 annealing, whereas Ge surface diffusion and intraisland diffusion prevail during annealing in a PH3 environment.

RESUMO

Experimental data have demonstrated that chronic infection with intracellular parasites may enhance resistance against some types of tumour. This phenomenon has not yet been demonstrated for experimental Trypanosoma cruzi chronic infection. This study investigated the effect of a specific colon cancer inducing drug, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH), on chronically T.cruzi infected Wistar rats. Infection was obtained by inoculation of 10(5) tripomastigote forms by subcutaneous (s.c.) route. Acute phase of the infection was monitored every other day by examination of a blood smear from each animal until negativation. In the early chronic phase of the infection, colon adenocarcinoma was induced by weekly s.c. injections of DMH at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight for 12 weeks. 102 animals were divided in four test groups: 39 infected rats received DMH (group 1); 32 non-infected rats received DMH (group 2); 16 infected rats and 15 non-infected animals were used as control groups. Animals were killed 6 months after the first dose of DMH. The whole colon was removed and prepared for light microscopic examination. Twelve animals from group 1 and 22 from group 2 had colon adenocarcinomas, the proportion of cancer being 30.7 and 68.7%, respectively (chi(2) = 10.16; P < 0.05). The relative risk of having a colon tumor in infected animals (group 1) was 0.45 (IC 95% 0.26-0.76), which is a protective risk compared with non-infected animals. These findings show that chronic infection with T.cruzi is associated with a lower incidence of DMH-induced colon cancer in rats.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the physical growth of Xavante children aged 5-10 years and living at the Sangradouro and são Marcos reservations, state of Mato Grosso, central Brazil. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in February 1997 in two native Brazilian Indian schools. Our sample included 233 children. The following data were collected: birth date, sex, weight, height, arm-muscle circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness. Data on height and weight were compared to National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) growth charts following the recommendation of the World Health Organization. RESULTS: Our results show that 9% of our population sample had height-for-age Z scores <-2. For boys, statistically significant differences (P<0.05) in height-for-age and weight-for-age Z scores were observed between the two communities. Similar differences were not observed for girls. Xavante children are, in average, shorter in height than North-American children. However, for some age groups, the average values of height overlap with those of the Brazilian children investigated by the National Research on Health and Nutrition (PNSN). CONCLUSIONS: The physical growth profile of Xavante children presented important differences when compared to that of a number of other South American native Indian populations. Based on the information collected, we argue that North-American curves can be used to evaluate the nutritional status of Xavante children.

RESUMO

Patients in the chronic phase of Chagas' disease and receiving corticoid because of concommitant diseases were treated with nifurtimox. We proved in another paper that in the chronic phase of Chagas' disease corticoid use is associated with increased parasitemia, as evaluated by xenodiagnosis. In this study nifurtimox use prevented this increase, and we suggest that in immunocompromised patients with chronic Chagas' disease the use of this drug could be useful.

Patients with chronic Chagas' disease and simultaneous medical problems treated with corticosteroid were studied in order to evaluate steroid influence on chronic Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Parasitological assessment, radiological and electrocardiographic studies as well as non specific tests were performed in patients and in a control group that included chronic infected patients not treated with steroid. Xenodiagnosis showed a clear increase in T. cruzi parasitemia, related to the corticosteroid dosage, without clinical manifestations during the study follow-up period.

RESUMO

The authors report a case of rhabdomyoma of the right ventricular cavity with outlet obstruction in a three-months old infant. The diagnosis was established by echocardiography. Bidimensional echocardiography study showed a polypoid tumor of the right ventricle. During the systole it was projected through the pulmonary valve, obstructing part of it. The Doppler study showed an important gradient between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. The resection was performed with success. The diagnosis of cardiac rhabdomyoma was made by microscopic study. It is emphasized the importance of the echocardiographic study in an infant with oligosymptomatic cardiac murmurs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To comprove the efficiency of acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) as platelet antiaggregant drug, a 100 mg/day dose base. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-eight patients were studied between 1988 and 1990. Platelet functions were measured using an aggregometer plus ADP 5 as platelet aggregation inductor. RESULTS: Two groups were studied: 1st group, using ASA (111 patients), 91 hypoaggregants; 2nd group, not using ASA (147 patients), 120 normals, 12 hypoaggregants and 15 hyperaggregants. From the 2nd group, 91 had another evaluation under the use of ASA and showed a clear effect of the drug. CONCLUSION: The use of aspirin, 100 mg/day dose, is enough to reduce platelet antiaggregation.
